Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass Review

Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass know exactly what kind of movie it wants to be: a goofy, weird, fast-moving comedy that fully commits to its ridiculous premise. I respect the way it leans into the chaos.

The story follows Gail Daughtry, a small-town hairstylist whose relationship falls apart after her fiancé actually uses their joking celebrity sex pass. Instead of just accepting the embarrassment, Gail decides she is going to even the score by finding her own celebrity crush, Jon Hamm. From there, the movie turns into a wild Hollywood road trip filled with strange characters, celebrity cameos, and one ridiculous situation after another.

What I liked most was Zoey Deutch as Gail. I think she carries the entire movie with her charm, timing, and likability. Gail could have easily been written as annoying or too clueless, but Deutsch makes her sweet, funny, and easy to root for. I liked that she played the character with real innocence, but also gave her enough determination to make the journey fun.

The supporting cast also impresses. Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Ben Wang, and Ken Marino all bring strong comedic energy, while the celebrity cameos add fun without overwhelming the film. Jon Hamm deserves credit for playing with his own image and being part of the joke. The Wizard of Oz influence adds personality beyond a basic raunchy comedy. Gail feels like a modern Dorothy, traveling through a strange new world in red shoes, picking up odd companions, and chasing the big mysterious figure at the end of the road. Instead of Oz, she’s moving through Hollywood. Instead of the Wizard, she chases Jon Hamm. This framing is clever.

David Wain's direction keeps everything moving quickly. I liked the energy, the randomness, and the way the movie throws joke after joke at the audience. Not every joke landed for me, and I do think some parts are a little too silly, but the movie has enough charm that I stayed with it. I would rather watch a comedy take big swings than play everything safe.

At its core, I think Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass are about fantasy versus reality.

Gail starts off chasing revenge and a celebrity dream, but the journey becomes more about her realizing her own worth. I liked that underneath all the absurd comedy, there is still a small emotional center.

Overall, I had a good time with this movie. Yes, it’s messy, ridiculous, and uneven—yet the cast, the Wizard of Oz inspiration, and Zoey Deutch’s performance made it work for me. This kind of comedy won’t be for everyone, but for me, the weirdness really was the fun. Funny, unpredictable, and packed with personality, Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass delivers laughs while taking viewers on a uniquely Oz-inspired journey through Hollywood.
