It’s a crossover event unlike any other! The monstrous Darkseid crosses dimensions to invade the world of Sonic the Hedgehog, seeking the ultimate power. Sonic and his friends have faced everything from mad scientists to ancient spirits, but the forces of Apokolips may be too much for them. Thankfully, the full heroic might of the Justice League arrives to back them up! Don’t miss part one of this unique crossover event!

The miniseries, penned by Sonic The Hedgehog veteran Ian Flynn, wastes little time setting the stage. Darkseid has his sights set on the Chaos Emeralds, and the boundaries between Sonic's world and the DC Universe collapse. Seeing the danger, the Justice League Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and Cyborg arrive to help out Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, and Silver. The story is entertaining from issue 1 to the conclusion of issue 5. I couldn't put it down. Flynn's writing shows his love for both franchises. He knows Sonic's world inside and out, and he treats the Justice League with a love and respect that works in Sonic's world. All the characterizations from the league are intact and not tweaked for the sake of it fitting in the Sonic world. The Dark Knight is still one step ahead, and Superman is still the Boy Scout we know and love. It gives a Justice League episode or Sonic AM vibes to the story. One of the biggest strengths of the book is the clever pairings for missions. Sonic and The Flash trade witty remarks on who is the fastest. Batman and Shadow brood on lost. Amy and Wonder Woman, Knuckles and Superman, Tails and Cyborg are tech bros. Finally, Silver and Green Lantern bond of willpower and hope.

In terms of art style, Adam Bryce Thomas delivers, and Sonic readers will be used to his work. Characters are expressive, and the action sequences are sharp. From the speed lines of Sonic and Flash's race to the looming presence of Darkseid, the pages burst with motion. Matt Herm's coloring amplifies the book, especially in the finale with a certain transformation which I won't spoil. However, a minor drawback in early issues where the Justice League looked out of place, and the art was not consistent. At times, it appears to switch to more Sonic's animated aesthetic in issues 1 and 2, but it bounces back from 3, 4, and 5.

Final Rating: DC x Sonic The Hedgehodge is a fun crossover. It's a celebration of what makes both universes special. It has heart, power, and speed, and what works the most is the camaraderie of heroes. The way Darkseid is used makes total sense, and there are some other cameos from both universes that fans will love. For fans of Sonic, DC, this crossover is done right and will leave you wanting more.
